It is also known as screen printing, which allows printing onto a number of softer materials including fabrics like t-shirts. What is Silk Screening?
Silk screening, often called screen printing, is a method that uses a mesh screen and a stencil to press ink onto fabric or other surfaces. A stencil blocks certain areas of the mesh so ink can only pass through where the design should appear, creating a clean, sharp image on the t‑shirt, hoodie, or other substrate.
This process can be done by hand for smaller runs or automated for bulk manufacturing, which makes it ideal for custom t‑shirts and large group orders in Omaha.
How the Screen Printing Process Works
1. Frame and Mesh Setup
A frame, roughly the size of the print area on your shirt, is stretched with polyester mesh to create the screen.
2. Coating the Screen
The mesh is coated with a thin layer of light‑sensitive emulsion or plastic, which will later form the stencil.
3. Preparing the Artwork
Your design is prepared for printing and separated into individual colors, since each color needs its own screen.
4. Exposing the Screen
Each color layer is placed on the screen, then exposed to light, which hardens the emulsion where the artwork blocks it.
5. Washing Out the Stencil
Unexposed emulsion is rinsed away, leaving open mesh areas in the exact shape of your design where ink can pass through.
6. Printing the Shirt
The shirt is placed on a flat board or press, the screen is positioned on top, and ink is applied and pulled across with a squeegee, transferring the image to the fabric.
7. Curing the Print
After printing, the shirts are heat‑cured so the ink bonds to the fibers, helping the design withstand repeated wear and washing.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Silk Screen Printing
The silk or polyester in silk screening serves to prevent the ink from blotting or bleeding out of the edges of your design. That said, there are still limitations with regards to the resolution. Of course this system means that your design will initially be in only one color. Multi-colored images require you to repeat this process multiple times with different stencils for different parts.
There are many other stenciling techniques that can be used for printing onto fabric. A completely different alternative uses transfers that are bonded to the fabric with high temperatures. Because these images can be printed using more precise techniques, this allows for far more detailed images that won’t have as many imperfections.
At the same time though, transfers also have their own problems as they make the material feel somewhat rigid. In addition, they can crack and peel after multiple washes. For more simple designs and logos, silk screening is a more desirable option. It will result in longer lasting and higher quality end products.
Limitations of Silk Screen Printing
Like any method, silk screening has limitations:
- It can be slower than standard paper printing.
- Each color requires its own screen, setup, and alignment.
- Extreme detail or small text may not reproduce as crisply as on some digital methods.
- Screens and stencils eventually wear out and must be replaced.
That said, silk screening still allows multiple prints from a single application of ink, making it fairly fast and cost‑effective for apparel printing once the setup is complete.
